And for those of us who have youngsters and in the Wausau region – school starts next week.

Top of the Michigan Mitten

I’m writing this from Shanty Creek in Michigan where the annual Midwest Ski Areas Association conference is taking place. It’s a great meeting of the minds and smaller than the national show we attended in May.

It’s my Midwest kick off for the winter! Yes I said winter. When you work in the industry it starts way before yours does. I will admit it’s been an amazing summer. Wisconsin summer weather… Love it! It is hot occasionally but temperatures are relatively comfortable and rain has been intermittent but not drought like! But with the end of August comes the reality that winter is not far away, especially for Granite Peak and I’m starting to get excited!

Scenic Rides Return!

We are again looking forward to welcoming back the fall colors and of course will be offering up scenic chairlift rides on the Comet 6 Express. They start Saturday September 10th and will take place every Friday night, Saturday and Sunday thereafter until the middle of October.

Friday nights this year will feature a traditional Fish Fry menu in the Historic Chalet and on September 30 & October 1st we are introducing the first ever Gosh Diddly Darn Festival! Yes that’s the name because it’s a plethora of mini-events into one.

  • Friday Sept. 30th is the Granite Peak Ski Team’s Casino Night Fundraiser
    • Season Pass Fall Deadline
  • Saturday Oct. 1st
    • Special 5k mountain fun race (registration coming soon)
    • Granite Peak Ski Team Ski Swap
    • Season Pass Pick Up with Free Custom GP Poster
      • Check out our new Admin Building!
    • 11am – 5pm Scenic Chairlift Rides
    • 2pm – 5pm Brad Emanuel performing on Historic Deck

We might add on some additional programs like some kids activities and vendors so stay tuned. Plus leaves should be in full color at that point so mark it on your calendar to come up to the hill!

Capital Updates

In other news our Administration Building expansion is nearing competition and the Historic Bathroom renovation is well underway and will be complete before November.

All of our snowmaking guns are getting their final tune ups in preparation to be awoken and all of the groomer tracks are fitted with their growzers

New unload ramps have been installed on Santa & the Blitzen Midstation to help our beginners unload safely to keep lifts spinning and signage is being swapped out as well.

Winter Lift Tickets

We anticipate lift tickets going on sale around Labor Day. I know many who read this are season passholder but if you are one who purchases tickets grab them before November 15th as you can get them at 25% off!

Acquisition News

Finally many are still wondering what’s going on with our acquisition of the Big Snow Resorts of Indianhead and Blackjack. It’s a process. As you know buying a house has fluid closing dates and buying two ski resort properties, lifts, buildings, groomers and other assets has a great amount of detail. It is still moving forward, we are 100% anticipating the close to happen any day now and 100% WE WILL be operating the resorts this winter. Any crossover season pass / ticket product program will be announced after the close of the sale. Stay Tuned.

Social Silence No MoreIm Back Woody GIF - Im Back Woody Toys Story2 GIFs

I know I’ve been lacking on Social this summer but let’s face it we are a three season resort (fall, winter, into spring.) Summer we can relax a little but as I said earlier MSAA kicks the marketing mode into high gear so…. I’m Back Baby! Look for daily updates, news on winter, fall and of course some plain old fun starting next week.

Cake, More Cake & Champagne….

I’d be remiss if I didn’t add in one small personal note as the end of summer marks three very important dates in my life! The birth of my first boy Ronan on August 30th, 2013, the birth of my second son, Logan on August 31st, 2016 and the anniversary of the woman who gave birth to these amazing kids, Mary on September 4, 2009. It’s an expensive week for daddy but one I enjoy every year.

Logan’s birthday falls on the first day of school. He’s not upset about it at all. He gets to bring cupcakes in on the first day of first grade. I think he’ll win over his classmates pretty quickly!

Winter is coming. See you soon.

Greg
